4Cs History

1968 The first national 4Cs (Community Coordinated Child Care)
program is established.
1972 The Iowa City 4Cs Child Care was founded by the League

of Women Voters of Iowa City.

1976 4Cs of Iowa City receives its first United Way funding.
1985 4Cs receives a grant from the Gannett Foundation and the

University of Iowa donates space in the Old Public Library,

allowing 4Cs to hire full-time staff and open the Toy Library

and Resource Center. The Toy Library offers toys, books,

games and other items to families and child care providers.

1993 The administrative offices move to the current Sycamore

Street location with more space.

1995 Home Ties Child Care Center is opened to serve homeless and other

at-risk children who need emergency child care.

2001 The Toy Library and Resource Center is located to Sycamore Mall.

A new support program, funded by Empowerment of Johnson County,

is created to help family child care providers through the help of a

child care consultant position.

2002 4Cs celebrates its 30th Anniversary!
2003 4Cs begins two new collaborations: The first is with agencies who serve

people with special needs so that these individuals can gain access to

resources at the Toy Library. The second collaboration is with area

agencies to establish the "Prevent Child Abuse-Johnson County" council.

2004 The first annual Teddy Bear Rally was held in May.
